KATHLEEN MAY
GOVERNOR'S HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY
NURSE AIDE PROGRAM COORDINATOR
BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL
Where are you from? I am from Hampton Roads, VA. I have lived here all of my life and feel that this is home.
What is your current job? I teach at the Hampton City Governor's Health Science Academy at Bethel High School.
Why did you choose HCS? When I started teaching at Hampton City Schools they chose me.
What do you love about HCS? Since I have been working at HCS I love the work environment, it is happy and friendly. I love the moment in teaching where the students says, "Wow, I never knew that" and they are learning something new every day.
What’s a fun fact about you? I think most people know by now...one of my hobbies is belly dancing. I dance with our school nurse in our dance group.
Describe your job? Enabling our students to find something that sparks their interest so that they can make an educated career choice.
How does HCS support your growth? HCS supports growth through the teacher leadership program that I started working on and they support me to attend professional development in the field of nursing and teaching at the Health and Medical Science Education Association Conference in order to keep up to date in the field of Health Science.

KYI BENKOWITSCH
5TH GRADE TEACHER
SPRATLEY GIFTED CENTER
Where are you from? Steelton, Pennsylvania
What is your current job? 5th grade teacher at Spratley Gifted Center
Why did you choose HCS? I chose HCS because from the very beginning everyone was supportive and helpful. HCS stood out to me when I found that there were virtual job fairs being held. This was huge for me being a military family, I was not local when I applied to work for the district. The openness for virtual interviews was an amazing difference that I could not find anywhere else.
What do you love about HCS? I love the support and camaraderie I feel in this district. I also love how much Hampton supports their military families in their schools. I feel that this district truly cares about its teachers' successes.
What’s a fun fact about you? I am an avid Harry Potter lover and too often quote the books and movies in appropriate situations!
Describe your job? I teach math and language arts to two groups of fifth grade students at Spratley Gifted Center.
How does HCS support your growth? Throughout the year our district offers training and help sessions to everyone. There are virtual training sessions being offered now too which are amazing for busy teachers!
“You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of FireTRAVIS OLIVER
MATH TEACHER
LINDSAY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Where are you from? I'm from Chicago but relocated here after spending four and a half years teaching in North Carolina.
What is your current job? I'm a middle school math teacher and 21st Century After School tutoring coordinator.
Why did you choose HCS? I chose HCS because of the immense amount of resources and support provided by the district. I also love the way the staff interacted and worked together. You could see the family environment from the time you entered the building.
What do you love about HCS? I love the access to decision makers. Whenever I have a question or need help with something I never have any issues with hearing back from the people who can provide the necessary information or support.
What’s a fun fact about you? I was a college football coach before transitioning to teach.
Describe your job? My job is to create meaningful lessons that extend beyond the classroom and curriculum.
How does HCS support your growth? Since becoming a part of HCS I have had several people recommend, push, or speak with me about opportunities to grow professionally. In the classroom, we constantly have access to our department leadership. The math department shows up to our school weekly to check up on us and provide any help needed.
